Basic Search Engine Optomisation - Introduction (Part 1)

One of the most frequent questions we get by asked clients with existing sites is “How can I get my site to the top of Google?”

There are many answers to this but the shortest solution has to be “Pick a niche set of keywords, build a decent site and be realistic about your rankings!”

Most of your site optimisation outlined below and on subsequent pages can easily be done yourself if your at all handy with a computer and know your way round your website. At a this level there is no need to pay over the odds for a marketing company to do the work for you unless you really don’t have the time to do it your self. At the very worst you might have to invest in a report to give you a clear indication of what you need to do and pay your developer to drop some new content and a couple of pages into your site on a regular basis. At the most this shouldn’t cost you more than £30 to £50 if you update your site on a monthly basis.

Back in the late 90’s and early 2000’s, search engines relied very heavily on both meta tags and key word density to rank pages. By the mid 2000’s it became apparent that many sites were getting top rankings by carefully crafted meta tags in the head of each web page and by filling the page content with the same key words.

By about 2008, Google changed its ranking algorithms so that it weighted more favourably sites with strong incoming links and organically produced pertinent content. In a nut shell the more popular the site and the better its content, the higher it would rank. This has never been truer today as Google more or less completely ignores the meta tags and can distinguish between an incoming link from a popular site, a link created from a “link exchange scheme” or “link farm” and link from a poorly used site.

Google also analyses content for pertinence and has developed complex algorithms for deciphering the relevance of content. This means that its no longer possible to stuff a keyword 20 times into your initial paragraph and get a good ranking – your more likely to be penalised heavily and drop 200 places overnight for adopting so called “black hat optimisation techniques”
